The Colour of Snow by Renu Parmar.
Cover designed by Asya Blue.

I had the privilege of collaborating with a very talented and gracious Canadian writer, Renu Parmar, on her debut literary novel called The Colour of Snow:

“This modern coming-of-age story spans three decades and casts a glow on the frailties and vulnerabilities of surviving a difficult childhood. This is a story about choices, and the peace we make with the choices we are not given. Quirky, funny, and painfully awkward, the alternating narrative voices of Maya and Sarika inspire the courage and wisdom it takes to liberate ourselves from the heartbreaking stories of our past.”

She self-published her book this past Fall and it’s available through Amazon and Booksie (where you can read the first chapter).

And this is from her website:

“I’m so excited to share my debut novel that was published this autumn! It has been a dream come true doing book signings around the city and having this story received by strangers and loved ones with so much enthusiasm. I have wanted to write a book since I was nine years old, and it took me eight years to craft this very emotional, vulnerable story about pain, loss, and just the sheer difficulty of being human. It is an inspiring story about overcoming a difficult childhood with grace and wisdom, and a good dose of humour.”

Editorial Responsibilities

I edited and formatted her book for self-publishing for print and e-book:

  • Conducted a copy edit and stylistic edit
  • Created a style sheet for consistency of spelling, punctuation, word usage, etc.
  • Formatted the manuscript and created files for print and e-book self-publishing (EPUB, MOBI, PDF)

“Deegy has a kind personable manner and is easy to work with. He expressed a lot of compassion for the sensitive subject matter of my story, and I appreciated this. Despite traveling and being in a different time zone, he always made himself available to email or FaceTime, and he welcomed my constructive feedback on his editing. I felt very comfortable expressing when a part of the process wasn’t working for me. Deegy also formatted my work for me. He did a fabulous job of putting my work on all platforms. (EPUB, Kindle, etc.).”

Learning Process

Professionally, this was a huge learning opportunity for me. I learned a great deal about literary writing and my shortcomings in editing this genre. I have a lot more to learn about this editing niche, and part of this learning process will be reading more literary books. So, if you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Proofreading & Formatting

Finally, if you have written a novel and you are looking for a proofreader and/or formatter for print or e-book publishing, please contact me. I can help you make sure your manuscript is ready for publishing.
